What is Spekboom?

Spekboom, scientifically known as Portulacaria afra, is a succulent shrub or small tree native to South Africa. It’s often referred to as the “bacon tree” due to the Afrikaans word “spek,” which means bacon. This name comes from the taste of its leaves, which have a slight bacon-like flavour.

Where Does it Come From?

Spekboom is indigenous to South Africa, particularly the Eastern Cape province. It thrives in arid and semi-arid conditions, making it well-suited to the country’s often harsh climate.

Why Has it Gained Popularity?

Spekboom has gained significant popularity in recent years due to its numerous benefits:

  • Carbon Negative: It is a carbon-negative plant, meaning it absorbs more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than it releases. This makes it a valuable tool in combating climate change.
  • Biodiversity: Spekboom provides habitat for various wildlife, including birds, insects, and small mammals.
  • Erosion Control: Its deep root system helps to prevent soil erosion, especially in areas prone to drought and desertification.
  • Aesthetics: Spekboom is a versatile plant that can be used in gardens, landscapes, and as a houseplant. It has a pleasing appearance with its succulent leaves and reddish-brown stems.

Uses of Spekboom

Beyond its environmental benefits, spekboom has several practical uses:

  • Food: The leaves can be eaten raw or cooked. They have a slightly sour and tangy taste and can be added to salads, stews, or used as a garnish. This is where the name for the plant comes from, as many say that the leaves have a taste similar to bacon, or ‘spek’ as it’s known in Afrikaans.
  • Traditional Medicine: In traditional South African medicine, spekboom has been used to treat various ailments, including fever, diarrhoea, and skin infections.
  • Livestock Feed: It is a valuable source of fodder for livestock, especially during dry periods.
  • Ornamental Plant: Spekboom is a popular ornamental plant due to its attractive appearance and low maintenance requirements.

With its numerous benefits and versatility, spekboom is a valuable asset to South Africa’s natural ecosystems and a promising plant for sustainable living.
